10.23.2019 Twelve years after breaking the story about the burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan in an investigative series for Army Times, experts say they continue to repeat themselves at congressional hearings as veterans fight for access to care. They say exposure to smoke from open pits that burned as much as 240 tons of trash a day near where troops lived and worked has caused everything from chronic lung issues to cancers.

There is hope: Researchers continue to work for cures, Jon Stewart has signed on for Public Service Announcements and Veterans Service Organizations have made the issue their main focus for the upcoming year.
